Canadian police question van driver

25-year-old Alek Minassian is being questioned by Canadian police after killing 10 pedestrians in a van attack in northern Toronto. Police say that the incident appeared to be deliberate, but are stating that the motive is not clear and that Minassian, who rented the van, was not previously known to authorities. At present, Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale has reiterated that there appears ‘to be no national security connections’ and that Minassian is not known to be associated with any known terror groups. Officials said the white rental van mounted the kerb on Yonge Street at about 13:30 local time (17:30 GMT) on Monday 23 April and drove into pedestrians along a 2km stretch. The vehicle was stopped by police several streets away and was quickly surrounded. The suspect was arrested 26 minutes after the first emergency call was made to the police.
