22 dead and 59 hurt in Manchester attack

A suicide attack has killed 22 people and injured at least 59 more following a concert at Manchester Arena. Greater Manchester Police have stated that the lone male attacker died in the blast, which happened at 22:35 BST on Monday 22 May, after detonating an improvised explosive device. The explosion happened in the arena's foyer as people began streaming from the doors at the close of the concert. Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said it was ‘the most horrific incident’ Greater Manchester had ever faced, and said that the ‘fast-moving investigation’ was now working to establish whether the attacker ‘was acting alone or as part of a network’. Home Secretary Amber Rudd has labelled the attack as ‘barbaric’, and ‘attack deliberately targeting some of the most vulnerable’. Prime Minister Theresa May is to chair a meeting of the government's emergency Cobra committee in response to the attack. The attack happened at the end of an Ariana Grande concert.
