UK launches cyber security unit

The UK government has launched a cyber crime unit in order to defend against attackers.

Minister for security James Brokenshire urged businesses to report any incidents in order to help the unit fight against the threat. It is believed many companies are not currently disclosing information on attacks through fear of exposing vulnerability and scaring shareholders.

Mr Brokenshire said the unit was launched in secret in February and will eventually be part of the national crime agency. According to him, 19 arrests have already been made and £500,000 of assets have been frozen. The new unit will see a rise in cyber security jobs within the government.

"We are facing a growing and ever more complex threat. But our response to it has grown too and our ambition is to go further," Mr Brokenshire added.

The communications data bill, which would allow the state to monitor internet communications, is currently being debated. The Conservative party and the police claim the bill is required, however the Liberal Democrats feel it could have implications on civil liberties.
