MI5 and police cleared of terror attack liability

The Guardian has reported that MI5 and the police will be cleared of making any serious mistakes that enabled four terrorist attacks in the UK this year.

The official reviews are expected to make a series of recommendations to minimise the chances of missing future attackers, including a new computer algorithm that will be used to detect behaviour indicating involvement in terrorism.

It is hoped that the algorithm will lessen the chance of anything being missed, informing decisions made by human case officers and analysts, not replacing them.

The recommendations also seeks improvements in the collaboration between MI5 and the police and a review of his closely the two organisations work together. It will also aim for an improvement in the handling and potentially increased sharing of data with other parties.

The internal inquiries began following reports that information was given MI5 about the Manchester attacker, Salman Abedi, which could have been given a higher priority.

The Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) is likely to meet to consider whether it should hold its own inquiry into the attacks in London and Manchester.
