National Security Strategy outlines tackling terrorism

Report warns that Britain must be prepared for different types of terrorist attack.

The National Security Strategy has been published, which outlines one of its key priorities as tackling terrorism.

The report assesses that the principal threat from international terrorism will continue to come from Al Qaeda, its affiliates, and terrorists inspired by its ideology.

It also warns that we must be prepared for different types of terrorist attack, as Al Qaeda still aspires to mass-casualty attacks, but the increased pressure it is under and the success of the security services in disrupting attacks has forced its members to explore other methods

For example, Al Qaeda and other groups have stated an aspiration to develop unconventional capabilities, such as chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear.

The security threat during the London 2012 Olympic games is also acknowledged, stating that robust preparations are being made but that the challenge must not be underestimated.

Home Secretary Theresa May said: "Together with the Strategic Defence and Security Review, this will deliver a step change in the UK's ability to protect its security and advance its interests in the world."
