European Commission outlines further steps to tackle radicalisation

The European Commission has outlined further steps to support Member States to tackle radicalisation. The announcement follows recent terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels and intends to support Member States across a number of policy areas. The Commission has highlighted seven specific areas where it believes greater cooperation at EU level can bring added value. These are: countering terrorist propaganda and illegal hate speech online; addressing radicalisation in prisons; promoting inclusive education and EU common values; promoting an inclusive, open and resilient society and reaching out to young people; strengthening the international cooperation; boosting research, evidence building, monitoring and networks; and focusing on the security dimension. The Commission will allocate funding, as well as work with Member States and relevant industries across these areas, to exchange experience and develop tools to better understand and limit the spread of radicalisation across Europe. Frans Timmermans, Commission First Vice-President, said: “Recent terrorist attacks have shown how some young Europeans have fallen prey to an ideology of death and destruction, breaking away from their own families and friends and turning against their own societies. This calls for a determined response by society as a whole, to prevent radicalisation and strengthen the ties that bind us together. The EU should help wherever it can."
