New powers to tackle radicalisation

The Conservative government’s plan to tackle radicalisation is to be announced in the Queen’s Speech on May 27th.

It is understood the proposals were first put forward by Home Secretary Theresa May before the general election but faced opposition from Liberal Democrat coalition partners.

The bill will include new immigration rules and measures to restrict the activities of individuals and organisations who are judged to want to radicalise young adults. These are expected to include banning orders for organisations who use hate speech in public places and the power to issue ‘Closure Orders’ to buildings used by extremist preachers.

Theresa May appeared on BBC Radio 4 to discuss the proposed bill:

"What we are proposing is a bill which will have certain measures within it, measures such as introducing banning orders for groups and disruption orders for individuals, for those who are out there actively trying to promote this hatred and intolerance which can lead to division in our society and undermines our British values.

"But it will be part of a bigger picture, a strategy which will also have as a key part of it actually promoting our British values, our values of democracy, rule of law, tolerance and acceptance of different faiths."
