EU should avoid recreating Nato structures

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has warned against undermining NATO by recreating its military structures. Speaking ahead of a meeting in Brussels, Fallon has said that he would be urging EU leaders to cooperate through the atlantic defence union, as reports suggest that EU foreign and defence ministers are expected to agree the establishment of a small military command centre in Brussels to aid ‘planning and conduct capability’. Britain has previously vetoed similar plans for EU military structures in 2011 and 2013, and although they are unlikely to block the current proposals, Fallon’s speech will highlight the UK’s stance on the ‘unnecessary duplication of structures’ and the importance of working ‘together on new threats’.
