Police chief says IS recruits have returned to East Midlands

The deputy chief constable for East Midlands has said that a number of people who travelled to join IS are now back in the East Midlands.

Peter Goodman, who is in charge of counter-terrorism for the East Midlands, has said the that communities and families need to work to challenge the dangerous messages that can be found online and contributing to the radicalisation of young people.

Discussing the prospect of young people travelling to join IS and then returning the UK, Goodman said: "The real concern is that they will be radicalised, desensitised, exposed to real atrocities that will change their outlook on life and may affect their behaviour back here in the UK.”

He added: ”It absolutely keeps me awake at night; we're talking about predominantly young people with not a great deal of life experience who are receiving a very corrupt narrative."
