UK troops arrive in Somalia as part of UN mission

UK Armed Forces have arrived in Somalia to help build tackle the threat posed by extremist group Al-Shabaab. The UK troops form part of the United Nations (UN) support for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), with the aim of bringing stability to the area. Up to 70 UK personnel are expected to be deployed to Somalia this year, who will provide provide medical, logistical and engineering support as part of a wider UK commitment to the country. Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said: “This deployment is another demonstration of the flexibility and global reach of our Armed Forces. “Alongside our efforts in Iraq, Syria and Nigeria, it shows our determination to tackle terrorism wherever it rears its head.”
