Anti-terrorism task force launched in Tokyo

A new anti-terrorism task force has been launched in Japan after the tragic end to its Islamic State hostage crisis.

On Tuesday, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga chaired a meeting of vice ministers to discuss ways to better protect its citizens.

He condemned the brutal execution carried out by IS, while warning that the act made terrorism a real and immediate threat.

Japanese Prime Minister Abe also raised the possibility of Japan's military playing a more active role in rescuing its citizens abroad.

However, some critics say he is using this latest crisis to push ahead with his agenda to have the right to collective self-defence, which would allow Japan's military to fight overseas -- a move that has drawn fierce opposition from Beijing and Seoul.
