Governments must not lose Counter Terror Technologies

Governments should take steps to ensure that they do not lose anti-terrorism technologies developed on military deployments as ops in Afghanistan begin to end within two years

Addressing delegates at the Counter Terror Expo in London, NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General Jamie Shea said nations needed to take advantage of the significant gains that had been made during actions against the Taliban.

In particular, he pointed out that the developments in counter-IED technology forged by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) had been particularly impressive and asserted there needed to be a continued investment in them.

Dr Shea said: “Post ISAF we must make sure that we continue to work on these technologies, which we have developed with the needs of the soldier in mind. In particular the area of forensics in terms of counter-IED work has been well developed and has enabled would-be suicide bombers to be put on trial. The techniques have worked well in Afghanistan, and we must keep them.”
