As part of Garran Lockers’ bespoke approach, the company is able to offer intelligent product solutions for securely storing and controlling access to vulnerable equipment, keys, etc. used by the police and other emergency forces.
“With continuous threats of attacks and other forms of terrorism, it is important to always keep security at the heart of an organisation’s continuity planning and business strategy,” explained Philip Lawrence, Managing Director of Garran Lockers.
“Whilst the number of highly sophisticated technologies and products for aspects such as surveillance and cyber-crime continues to rise, it is important to remember there are some simple and cost-effective things organisations can do to safeguard their assets and counter terror threats.”
Having worked with over 450 emergency services, Garran Lockers has designed and manufactured specialist lockers like boot seat lockers, equipment storage for the Fire and Rescue Services and large strengthened kit and storage lockers for the Police.
Garran Lockers’ bespoke design and manufacturing capability means these organisations are able to secure the specific storage solutions that enable them to meet their exact needs.
The Fireman’s boot seat locker, for example, has a fixed shelf, with a coat rail and two coat hooks.
The lift-up lid is retained in the closed position by the main door when locked. A top blanket and / or storage box is available to add to the top of this locker thereby increasing the storage potential if required.
Similarly Garran Lockers’ equipment lockers are fitted with a hat shelf and a central divider, with three fixed shelves on the left hand side, and a coat rail and one fixed coat hook on the right hand side.
These are available with flat or sloping tops in various sizes. On widths of 525mm & 600mm Garran Lockers offers a 3 point espagnolette lock.
As well as quality and reliability, Garran Lockers offers easy access to its in-house design services, and is able to offer advice based on several years’ experience working with the emergency services sector, irrespective of the size or restrictions of the changing area or storage area concerned.
This includes working with a number of leading door lock suppliers including ASSA ABLOY.
The UK emergency services are under constant pressure to be more efficient and effective.
The services are expected to respond as a matter of course to a diverse range of emergencies and on an ever increasing scale.
The public’s rising expectations of consistent and high response rates compound that challenge.
As part of that drive, many fire services and police stations have undergone or are undergoing refurbishment projects to make them better equipped and crewed to offer a consistent and excellent response to emergency incidents.
Well-designed lockers and storage areas at the emergency stations are of vital importance as fast access to changing facilities and the right equipment can make an impact on the effective service delivery.
What customers in the Emergency Services sector had to say
“Garran’s practical solution helps us save the vital seconds when responding to emergency calls; the lockers are used regularly and yet show no damage plus Garran’s service is second to none.” Graeme Major, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service
Many emergency services storage needs are unique because of their specialist uniforms and their need to have the fast and practical access to the whole range of accessories and equipment when responding to emergency calls 24 hours a day.
As the UK’s major supplier of specialist lockers and storage solutions for the emergency services, Garran Lockers has been working with many police and fire services to design and implement tailored locker solutions that meet their various needs and budgets.
Emergency Services customers include: Thames Valley Police, Strathclyde Police, Metropolitan Police, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, London Fire, Devon and Cornwall Police, Avon and Somerset Police, Hampshire Police, Kent Police and Essex Police, among many others.
Garran Lockers continually invests in incorporating the latest technological developments from smart payment locks to antibacterial coatings from its newly commissioned finishing plant.
Existing features include an integrated sloping top as a standard part of the unit whilst all steel lockers are spot welded together rather than alternatives using weaker riveted solutions.
The lockers have vented doors to aid air circulation and the doors are fully stiffened to close against a 10mm flattened and safety edged doorstops on each side.
Garran Lockers currently offers the widest range of ‘built to measure’ and standard lockers available. Lockers are available in a range of tiers from one to 10.
When considering the establishment’s specific security requirements, Garran Lockers is able to offer a number of options from standard steel lockers to its tough Titan range.
This includes a range of lockers with Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) doors fitted to a steel carcass with a bolt through super-coated hinge in. This gives you a locker with the combined advantage of SGL doors combined with the strength of the spot welded steel carcass.
The result of this marriage is an extremely robust locker built to resist vandalism at an affordable price.
Garran Lockers’ Titan and Titan Plus lockers are more robust and can help eliminate the damage that can often happen when lockers are badly used. The doors and stiffeners are made from 1.2mm steel and are safety edged, then secured to specially strengthened pillars.
These lockers are ideal for any area where there is heavy usage or where damage may be a re-occurring problem.
Titan Plus offers the same range of features and sizes as the Titan but with an even heavier gauge mild steel door. Doors and stiffeners are made from 1.5mm gauge mild steel.
Garran Lockers offers a complete range of sizes from a junior locker for younger users, a full length locker to a 6 tier unit, with flat or sloping top, in sizes from 1800mm x 300w x 300d to 1800 x 450w x 450d.
A range of locking options are available from camlocks fitted with two keys to coin/ token return locks to combination or electrical locks.
Standard locking options include a choice of the following:
Camlock with 2 keys - All lockers come as standard with either camlock with 2 keys or a hasp and staple fitting suitable for a padlock which is not supplied. Other options are available.
Garran Lockers’ 10 lever Cam Lock provides an economical locking option. Master keys are available.
Hasp & Staple fitting suitable for a padlock - This lock fitting is suitable for use with a padlock with minimum shank of 5.8mm and maximum shank of 6.8mm. Padlocks not supplied.
Coin/Token Return Lock - Ideal where locks are shared. The key is released when the coin/token is inserted. The coin/token is returned to the user when the door is opened.
Coin/Token Return Lock - Also suitable where locks are shared. This option allows the coin/token to be retained as an additional income stream.
Electrical 10 Digit Lock - This is a battery operated keyless lock which can be programmed for private or public use.
4 Digit Combination Lock - This is a keyless locking solution. Master keys are available.
When it comes to the use of colour within the emergency services’ environment, function ought to reign over aesthetics every time, explained Mr Lawrence.
“Large amounts of bright colours, especially reds and oranges for example, have been shown by several studies to have the potential to cause over-stimulation whilst colours such and blue and green tend to have a largely calming effect.”
Garran Lockers offers a choice of colours and finishes with locker doors available in everything from standard steel to laminate coatings to specifically branded lockers.
For changing rooms or cloakrooms, Garran Lockers offers double or single cloakroom bench units that can be supplied in a variety of sizes to suit the establishment’s specific needs.
Benches are manufactured from 50mm round heavy duty tube, with ash or SGL seating, hook board and back seat. The overall height is 1675mm with a seat height of 400mm.
“As well as the significant body of evidence around the positive effects colour can have on enhancing emotional wellbeing, good design principles include everything from design to improve privacy to maximising security,” said Mr Lawrence.
Garran Lockers’ Z locker, for example, is ideal for when space is at a premium. These lockers are designed so that each locker compartment can comfortably hang up a coat or similar. The Z locker is fitted with internal clothes hooks, available with laminate doors and come in a range of colours.
Yet emergency service organisations are often at the centre of pressure from outside forces and are required to meet a wide range of challenges resulting from today’s constantly evolving marketplace said Mr Lawrence.
He commented: “This can include the need for the establishment to widen its appeal or the need to improve security within the premises or having to deal with rising redevelopment or improvement costs.”
